Green Smoothies from The Big Chill and Rawlicious

If you find my green smoothie-related posts too weird or radical or if you predict such will be a bland and dissatisfactory experience, you might want to give the The Big Chill's raw vegetable juice bar a chance. What's there to lose if you'll just come over and choose among their offerings? Ok, that'll cost about P90-150, but that's just about the same range we shell out for those sugar-loaded milk teas with add-ons, right? [I should know.]

The Big Chill in Greenbelt 1

The veggie juice variants!

GREEN DREAMS - green apple + cucumber + bitter gourd (aka ampalaya) + celery + green bell pepper ("beauty" drink and high in calcium)
BROCCOLI BUSTER: white cabbage + broccoli + pineapple (anti-cancer properties)
PINE LEMON: pineapple + cucumber + green lemon + orange (great for skin, natural diuretic and high in Vitamin C)
RED ALERT : red beetroot + carrot + celery + pineapple (blood fortifier, liver detoxifier and iron builder)
APPLE WHEAT: green apple + fresh organic wheatgrass + pineapple + orange (wheatgrass is a natural energizer, body cleanser, body builder and weight control aid).

Among these options, I've once tried Red Alert to quench my thirst and hunger one Sunday noon. After my commute from Makati to Quezon City, I proceeded to have my late lunch. If you'll give green smoothies a try, make sure NOT to eat 45 minutes before and after drinking it and chew the smoothie (meaning mix the saliva with the liquids inside your mouth before swallowing) to maximize its benefits. More guidelines here.

I wish I have other commercially-known brands to name-drop here before you could start dismissing this as a sponsored entry or something. I must admit I'm clueless if its direct competitors have been providing green smoothies aside from the fruitty ones and I apologize for that.

However, if you frequent the Legazpi Market in Makati every Sundays, you've probably experienced the green juices from Rawlicious. In case you haven't, they actually deliver or allow pick-ups here. I also subscribed to their weekly dose of healthy tips and delivery-related announcements. If you'd like to be included in their loop, feel free to send them an email to rawliciousplanet@yahoo.com. And here's their green smoothie menu:

HELLA GREEN: pure coconut water + mango + banana + organic greens (hydrates the body due to its electrolytes)
JOE'S GREEN MIND: organic greens + organic cucumber + organic mint + apple + banana + pure coconut water (helps detoxify the body due to its beta-carotene)
GREEN MONSTER XAVIER: organic greens + pineapple + banana + organic ginger (encourages healing of the body and aids in digestion)
GREEN DREAM CASANOVA: organic greens + organic cilantro + pineapple + apple + banana + cinnamon (detoxifier of metals and other impurities)
GREEN LOVER LUNA : watermelon + organic greens + organic malunggay + banana + cinnamon (promotes healthy kidneys and immune system)
BITTER SWEET XAVIER : pineapple + apple + organic greens, organic bitter gourd + banana (antiseptic and antibacterial for the body)
GREEN SOUL BRITA: pure coconut water + papaya, organic greens + banana (loaded with digestive enzymes and anti-oxidants)

Breakfast: Zucchini-Camote Tops-Pineapple Smoothie!

Woke up this morning with great guilt for choosing slumber par-tey over zumba last night (blame it on back-to-back OTs that made my body demand for lazy Saturday night) and mounting hunger. When I saw a plateful of fried hotdogs in the dining table, I immediately rummaged the fridge for greens. I haven't gone to the grocery to purchase vegetables and fruits yet! Yes, it sucks to be the only vegetarian in a household of meat lovers.

To my surprise, there were zucchini leftovers and fresh stash of camote tops from my aunt's backyard in General Trias in the fridge and ripe pineapple in the fruit stand. As they say, the rest is history.

The rawk stars!

By the looks of it, the camote tops IS the brighest star!

I recall how my father used to imply my green smoothies would taste better if I'll add a dash of cinnamon. Now that he's gone abroad again for employment and I'm all by myself in my misadventures in the kitchen, I decided to finally take his advice. Off you go, cinnamon!

What's In My Lunchbox Today? Persimmon-Bok Choy-Cucumber Smoothie

I found a green smoothie recipe that required 4 very ripe persimmons, 1 stalk of celery, 1 handful of baby spinach, 1 handful of dill and 2 cups of water. When I unexpectedly found persimmons in a nearby market, I grabbed a handful and racked my brains for the other ingredients. Yes, memory gap happens. Daily!

Days had passed since this discovery but I was still yet to find time to search for the other ingredients. But what else can you expect from someone who failed the marshmallow test several times in this lifetime? I fished for the available greens in the fridge and combined them with the persimmons.

What's In My Lunchbox Today? Chico-Banana-Spirulina Smoothie

I've heard my best friend Lakapati rave about the chico-banana combo before. Being a sweet-toothed monster that I am, I decided to give it a try today. Aaaand, for the first time, I felt an experimental soul creep within me. I reached for my container of spirulina to make it deliciously green. Superfood, work with me!

What's In My LunchBox Today? Green Smoothie + Eggplant Salad

According to a study, a child is about only 3% likely to influence his/her own parents to accept the Christian faith. A mother can make it about 20% more likely while a father can make this transition take place about 90%! Would this statistical result also be possible when introducing a healthy habit?

Yesterday, I had an unexpected opportunity to entice my parents to get into raw food diet. Being a typical Papa's girl, I asked my recently-pescatarian father to help me out in crushing the ice before throwing them into my poging blender. The next thing I know, my mother rose from siesta and participated in our little pep talk with the rawk stars. Can you blame me for stepping back and taking BlackBlurry™ photos instead?

Believe me when I say I'm radiating with gratitude after they've tried the green smoothie. Papa went on to say we should add cinnamon and made plans to include cucumber tomorrow while Mama inquired if this will be a daily habit or what. God, thank You!

What's In My Lunchbox Today? Spirulina Milk!

It's always not enough to attend workshops like this. Awareness is great; but the real self-gift is action. And that's what I did even if my growing space in my parents' kitchen do not boast of the ingredients for my next mission: spirulina hemp milk. Based on the how-to in Chef Asha Peri's hand-out, this smoothie is comprised of all the superfoods that you can think of. I remember my best friend Fristine's testimonial stating one glass of this drink will keep you hyper for 12 hours.

For today's trial, I prepared the following:

Raw almonds, soaked overnight

Spirulina

Coconut meat

Ice

Peppermint oil

Coconut sugar

Boyz II Men's music (to arouse the loving self in me. Chos!)

Lots of luuuuuurve!

Raw almonds from Healthy Options

The star of the night! I bought this half-kilo stash of spirulina from Dahon Kusina

Coconut meat

Available in your suking tindahan!

Peppermint oil, P105 in Cooks Exchange

Coconut sugar

Using almond milk as base

Green as it should! Yay!

One blender-ful of this concoction should be good for the next 3 days! The larger pitcher at the back will be for future use.

NOTE: I don't really place my lunchbox in the fridge. Just for posterity purposes! =P

And so I asked my Hell's Kitchen-obsessed brother how he finds my creation. He found it bland, save for the mint! Then he took another sip and, in attempt to reverse my sad face, possibly quoted someone from the mentioned show and said "It's like orgasm in my mouth!". Yeah, right!

Lunch break! That's past midnight for you.

When it was turn to experience my spirulina milk, I automatically disagree with my brother's comments. My taste buds recognized the almonds, coconut and everything else! At the same time, it's far from being considered orgasmic either. [EDIT: I asked Fristine, Ingrid and Andrea to try my concoction during the raw food potluck the following day and they said it's actually good. Fristine thinks cacao nibs would make it more flavorful, though. Must complete the ingredients!] I therefore conclude that it all depends on people's taste buds. My brother could use more superfood in his diet, that's all.

Cheers!

The Lighter Side of Raw: Chi & Qi Energy Food Workshop

The first time I heard The Lighter Side of Raw will conduct a raw food workshop on energy, I immediately said yes, yes, yes! to the Universe. After all, the primary reason I opted to slowly switch from heavy flesh-food to 80% raw food diet is to regulate my ever-fluctuating energy levels and perform well in all commitments and advocacy I engaged my heart into. While most people suspect it's all about the roseate image of weight loss and possibly reinforced by recent changes in my body, I consider that a potential by-product of conscious, healthy living. And it's all because of the wellness concerns I detailed here. Why only potential? I'm convinced I can never escape what my bone structure had destined my body to be. And I'm not complaining.

This is my second time to attend Chef Asha Peri's raw food workshop. The first time was before Christmas last year. I remember inviting my best friend Fristine to join and, due to unexpected events like gerd attack, she ended up dragging her husband Alvin with her. Now, she's a complete rawk star in the raw food and sustainable living community. She takes great pride and joy in sharing how this lifestyle change immensely changed her life for the better.

The rawk star and the groupie!

For breakfast, we had a demo of smoothies and buckwheat porridge with mango butter (otherwise known as kaduling pudding). Per Asha's research, buckwheat is high in iron, protein and manganese, making it an excellent regulator of blood sugar. My mother should take this in high dosage!

Smoothies galore! Counterclockwise: Almond milk, spirulina hemp milk and almond choco-blueberry milk.

Buckwheat porridge with lots of spirulina. Tastes like oatmeal!

Mango butter! Seriously, you have to try this!

For lunch, we were divided into groups to do hands-on work. We were asked to bring our own apron, kitchen towel, chopping board and medium-sized knife. I brought mine out and met up with my groupmates to make our assigned meal: salad with tahini miso dressing (inspired by Matthew Kenney). The others were to create Japanese glass noodles (inspired by Sayuri Tanaka), spring rolls with miso cheese, sake broth with coconut noodles (also by Matthew Kenney) and fudge tahini choco sandwiches for dessert. Yum!

The last time I wore this apron? Way back in HELE days! Check out the ruffles!

By the time we need to prepare for dinner, I already felt my eyelids grew heavier. Have I told you I had a quick shower after the previous night's shift and went straight to Creative Space for the workshop? Worse, I woke up too early before my own alarm clock asked me to. As mentioned here, it's been my sob story the entire workweek.

But try saying the word "dessert" or "tahini energy balls for dessert" and any human being who's been up for the past 25 hours would definitely wet his/her lips and get an instant boost. Again, we're divided into groups for our own raw food creations, namely, Bok Choy salad (inspired by Matthew Kenney), Chinese dumplings with hoisin sauce and Lo Mein noodles (both inspired by Elaina Love). Since I've helped prepare salad for lunch, I wanted to do something new this time. With my stunted motor skills, I didn't dare to sign up for the Chinese dumplings. Lo Mein noodles, it is! The challenge was to use zucchini instead of kelp noodles. I worked on chopping the ingredients like shitake mushrooms to have it marinated right away. I wanted to try using the spiralizer for the zucchini, but then again, I'm too clumsy to do so. Next time, I will!

Mixing the ingredients...with luuuurve! Until Fristine asked me to use both hands instead.

How come Imee looked delightful when trying to get a forkful of zucchini? I looked pitiful until Fristine saved the day!

Needless to say, I had moments of inadequacy. I wished my father obliged me to spend more time in the kitchen than in the dining table when I was younger. I felt - and I still feel - that I have a load of catching up to do. While raw food preparation may require less amount of effort compared to actual cooking, I seriously need to be acquainted to the tools and the ingredients. That night, I learned that peeled zucchini tends to water on its on own and salting it is the way to go.

Any raw foodist would tell you that they can indulge now and never experience sluggishness later. The fullness is always just right. After today's back-to-back fest, I felt light and rejuvenated. Though I recognize the mounting desire to crawl to my bed, it is rather manageable than what I used to experience when I remain up and out on Saturdays after my Friday shift.

Imagine my surprise when Asha herself told me, "Ang cute ng energy mo! Parang high school lang," Wow. High school is like...the peak of high energy - raging hormones, fangirl madness and everything! Am I the last to realize I looked like a rabbit who keeps going and going that evening? Looking back, it must be my famed cam-readiness that made her say that.

Need proof of my lens-radar? I can bore you with more proofs if you like...

The best part of that day's workshop? When we all sat down to discuss body-mind constitutions and how we can personalize our diet based on that. Based on the chart they provided for our review, there are three main doshas, namely, vata, pitta and kapha. Upon seeing that big-framed people whose elemental image is water are typically kaphas, I skipped the other two and convinced myself that I'm likely a kapha. When Asha was done discussing the entire dosha constitutional types, I was quick to label myself as a kapha-vata. Without taking the test on Gabriel Cousens's book.

The results shocked me. I'm a vata-pitta!

Kapha - 56

Pitta - 91

Vata - 140

While I'm extremely grateful for this discovery, I am somehow affected that I allowed my body size determine my dosha and, in turn, define who I am. My body may be unconventionally vata, but my core is. It felt as if I'm no different to people who easily judge big people as lazy, overindulgent and undesirable. And it bothers me.

And...in true vata fashion, I shall hug and forgive myself. In 5, 4, 3, 2...
