Juice Feast: Day 1 of 3

When I first heard my best friend Lakapati's profound reason for going on a 30-day juice fasting one Sunday noon, I was impressed with her determination and immense preparation for this mission. I even found it clever that she re-branded this seemingly food deprivation journey as "juice feast" because, after all, it's enjoyment of bottomless and energy-giving juices all month long. This idea made me curious about my own inner strength and, at that time, I felt I was far from ready to jump into such experiment. Little did I know that I will undergo the same challenge this Holy Week.

Along with my small group friends, I will spend this year's Maundy Thursday until Black Saturday in prayer and (water) fasting in Touch of Glory Prayer Mountain in Antipolo. In preparation for this commune with the Lord, I deemed it necessary to slowly re-introduce higher percentage of raw food in my diet during the weekend and begin this week with juice feast. I know the first 3 days would be the hardest and it's wise to hold the onset of such diet on my rest days, but I really have no choice but to just do it on a manic Monday. Unlike Lakapati's, this all-liquid diet wasn't carefully thought out and I had no guidelines to follow for my consumption all week. I'll drink whatever's healthy and available.

My plan to go completely food-free yesterday backfired; I started the day with brewed coffee and nilagang saba, had fruit platter comprised of grapes, oranges, ripe mangoes, strawberries and dragonfruit for lunch (hey, you've got to laud me for turning down the birthday girl's offer to feast on pizza, pasta, ice cream, chocolate ice cream and soda), fell prey to emotional blackmail and had meatless tomato-based pasta for merienda and vegetable soup for dinner. With this amount of food intake, how else will I prepare for the big challenge that awaits me today? I started with a tearful prayer.

DAY 1, TUESDAY

For the first time since I went on day shift, I deviated from my usual wake-up drink. I went past the usual breakfast spot to look for smoothies. No sugar, no milk. My breakfast buddies were astounded to see my cold drink. Tatat even ordered French-pressed coffee, assuming that we'll share it just like yesterday.

While my colleagues ordered coffee in Starbucks, I joined the queue for a smoothie in banchetto

Decisions, decisions!

That's my tall smoothie surrounded by hot coffee

Closer: 22-oz watermelon + mango + papaya + pineapple smoothie

How did my body welcome this switch? I don't think it protested, considering my inclination to cold drinks and special thanks to the humidity these days. Besides, my theoretical breakfast when I was still in graveyard shift involves green smoothies. Not daily, but still the anacondas can remember how we enjoyed smoothies after waking up.

Unfortunately, I forgot my mug (a recycled Amazon blueberry white tea glass) back in the apartment. I am yet to have my own locker so I tend to lug it around with the rest of my gold bars everyday. Anyway, I had to settle on my batchmate's long-abandoned mug and had to constantly remind my clumsy self to be mindful of it. No spill, no problem!

Today's borrowed mug and my prescribed medicines.

Like I mentioned in the prior entry, I was recently diagnosed to have bacterial sinusitis and advised to undergo medications for 2 weeks. This poses a problem as we can't take antibiotics, antihistamine and congestant in an empty stomach. Should I bring fruits for my stay in the Prayer Mountain?

If there's anything I'm grateful for about this illness, I noticed that my body doesn't like being bloated anymore. It just wants to be satiated frequently in moderate amounts. Plus, the drug intake made me crave to sweat and pee more often. Out you go! It really paved the way for this juice feast to be easier. Also, it made exposure to secondhand smoke a sensory overload experience. Hence, I didn't stay long in Starbucks earlier. Besides, I had an urgent deal to work on.

Even before lunchtime rolls around, Ian had been asking who else wants to indulge on ice cream. He's been fixating on FIC. I reminded him about my juice feast and offered to join him go down and hunt for his desired flavor. I was up for some sunshine and leg workout. FIC, to my shock, happens to be inside the Eastwood Mall. Ian sounded so sure it was just in Eastwood Citywalk, not too far from our building. Could you just imagine the long aisle of restaurants that seduced my taste buds every step I made?

To pass the ice cream test or to pass the ice cream test?

But the real test happened when I stood in front of the wide array of ice creams. It's no secret I'm a sucker for such and the bipolar weather made it so easy for us mortals to forget the calories. To my surprise, I didn't feel my mouth water at all. In fact, I silently wished Ian would make up his mind which variant he'll purchase so we can head back to the pantry and have lunch. Pronto!

Typically mouthwatering. But, not today!

But Lady didn't prepare her lunch today and she had conditioned herself to have chicken inasal. When I saw the long queue, I can't help but feel impatient for the further delay. I started feeling dizzy out of hunger and out of intolerable heat. Before heading back, Ian wanted to make a last-minute visit in Pan de Manila but changed his mind upon hearing my bratinella spiels. THAT I don't like to happen in Prayer Mountain!

As expected, my lunch dates took turns to quiz me on this decision. Ian was far from being supportive, motioning how delectable his steamed chicken was. When Cel and her baon arrived, the memory of the forbidden pasta yesterday resurfaced. I found myself stare at her plateful of red pasta then turn away. Noooo!!!

My lunch dates: Ian and his steamed chicken and veggies, Lady and her chicken inasal

Me and my lunch!

145-g grape juice

More lunchdates: Wini and his tocino and She and her garlic longganisa meal

Cel and her tempting pasta from Ristorante Bigoli

After shift, I dashed to Ortigas to seek for second opinion about my periodontitis. The Intellicare-accredited dentist who performed my oral prophylaxis 2 weeks ago recommended a surgical procedure to re-countour my gums that amounted to P10,000. No way! Anyway, the sun was punishing us commuters as if it were still high noon. By the time I made it to Robinson's Galleria and supposedly looking for the dental clinic, my throat was looking for a thirst-quencher. First things first!

And I made it to the dental clinic!

The BEFORE photo

The AFTER photo. How bloody!

The deep scaling procedure (without anesthesia, mind you) lasted for approximately 2 hours. To my relief, my blood clots on time and I survived the pain. After applying the last solution to my teeth, she advised me not to eat anything for the next 30 minutes. It could be the pain coupled by how sticky the solution felt inside my mouth that trigged this emotional eater to look for a reward. After mentioning my juice fast, the dentist responded I should use a straw for my drinks so it would be directed to the passage without bothering the teeth and gums. She also advised me to replace Gumtect with Lacalut Aktive and start using PerioGard. I think I'll go oil pulling before I switch to those. What do you think?

On my way home, my feet led me back to the mall and I was once again exposed to various aroma that tickled my olfactory nerves. Sinigang na hipon to the left, pasta to the right. It was maddening! Thankfully, there's a smoothie bar at the end of this long jungle. I asked for pineapple-banana-blueberry smoothie. Again, no sugar and no milk.

The much-deserved stopover!

Straws for my drinks? Check!

Closer: 16-oz pineapple-banana-blueberry smoothie!

When I made it to Cubao, I felt unease consume me again. The sun is already out of the question. I felt compelled to hurry up; today's breakfast and lunch must make a graceful exit! As soon as I arrived in the apartment, I made my second discharge for the day. And it was a rarity for a constipated fellow like me. I felt so ecstatic I was THIS close to post a photographic evidence!

My boyfriend Waldo had earlier asked if we can meet for dinner (that's midnight snack for us normal people). We've had conflicting schedules recently and we haven't seen each other for the past 7 days. Much to my chagrin. He wanted to see how I'm doing after this difficult day and I intended to exaggerate my stomach's demands and dizziness to earn a big hug. While waiting for him, I was writing this entry in longhand. When he finally called, my body thinks the hug can wait. Morpheus wins tonight.

Photo A Day April - Day 1: Your Reflection

Today's photo-a-day assignment made me reflect and write about my observations for the previous month. See, I was a total portrait of overjoy when I was informed about my successful application for a lateral movement up north. I've been on graveyard shift since graduating from college and even while I pursued graduate studies. I've been on this nocturnal lifestyle from April 2003-June 2009, made a one-year rest then crawled back to this madness in June 2010 until this February 2012. I envisioned being a morning person would complement my gradual switch to raw food diet and other wellness-related explorations.

To my dismay, I stared at the woman in the mirror the past week more often and I don't know how to begin to console her. Her reflection was far from the expected AFTER photo for someone who turned her back on night differential for priceless night sleep and normalcy. Today's portrait is a pale canvass marred with rallying zits, red, tired peepers and suffering nostrils. Blame it on the typically toxic quarter-end in the workplace, the bipolar weather, my rented room's tendency to accumulate dust and possible decline in citrus consumption, I was diagnosed to have sinusitis for the first time in my life. My usual avoidance of drugs when having colds turned to parade of antibiotics, antihistamines and congestant. My targeted 80% raw food diet went down to about 10-20%. My recent idea of exercise involves pushing keypads and jumping into conclusions. Sadly, I've gone absent to the usual Thursday smash-out sessions with colleagues. Also, the kikay in me showed no enthusiasm to debut two ensembles waiting for their turn to see what's outside my closet let alone keep my signature pussy red lipstick. It felt I have no appetite for everything. Worse, it's my boyfriend Waldo who gets all the OMG-you-look-so-blooming! compliments. What's going on?

Day 1: Your Reflection

I tried dry skin brushing before taking a shower this morning to help eliminate the toxins and to boost my immune system. All I did was brush my skin all over towards the direction of my heart. My upper chest turned the reddest and I didn't really linger on the soles of my feet as it made me go giggly. I'm not sure if I did it right or if I spent enough time as I was running late for the Sunday service. I hope I would carry this on and see its benefits. Now this reminds me of my failure to inner dance often and finally give oil pulling a try. Sighs. Somebody needs spanking.

The olive oil-infused bristles for my dry skin brushing. But I think THIS is the recommended type.

By the way, if you're interested to partake in this photo-a-day challenge, check out the day-to-day assignment below. It can get really addicting and, just like what I did above, ponder on some matters. Join us!

Green Smoothies from The Big Chill and Rawlicious

If you find my green smoothie-related posts too weird or radical or if you predict such will be a bland and dissatisfactory experience, you might want to give the The Big Chill's raw vegetable juice bar a chance. What's there to lose if you'll just come over and choose among their offerings? Ok, that'll cost about P90-150, but that's just about the same range we shell out for those sugar-loaded milk teas with add-ons, right? [I should know.]

The Big Chill in Greenbelt 1

The veggie juice variants!

GREEN DREAMS - green apple + cucumber + bitter gourd (aka ampalaya) + celery + green bell pepper ("beauty" drink and high in calcium)
BROCCOLI BUSTER: white cabbage + broccoli + pineapple (anti-cancer properties)
PINE LEMON: pineapple + cucumber + green lemon + orange (great for skin, natural diuretic and high in Vitamin C)
RED ALERT : red beetroot + carrot + celery + pineapple (blood fortifier, liver detoxifier and iron builder)
APPLE WHEAT: green apple + fresh organic wheatgrass + pineapple + orange (wheatgrass is a natural energizer, body cleanser, body builder and weight control aid).

Among these options, I've once tried Red Alert to quench my thirst and hunger one Sunday noon. After my commute from Makati to Quezon City, I proceeded to have my late lunch. If you'll give green smoothies a try, make sure NOT to eat 45 minutes before and after drinking it and chew the smoothie (meaning mix the saliva with the liquids inside your mouth before swallowing) to maximize its benefits. More guidelines here.

I wish I have other commercially-known brands to name-drop here before you could start dismissing this as a sponsored entry or something. I must admit I'm clueless if its direct competitors have been providing green smoothies aside from the fruitty ones and I apologize for that.

However, if you frequent the Legazpi Market in Makati every Sundays, you've probably experienced the green juices from Rawlicious. In case you haven't, they actually deliver or allow pick-ups here. I also subscribed to their weekly dose of healthy tips and delivery-related announcements. If you'd like to be included in their loop, feel free to send them an email to rawliciousplanet@yahoo.com. And here's their green smoothie menu:

HELLA GREEN: pure coconut water + mango + banana + organic greens (hydrates the body due to its electrolytes)
JOE'S GREEN MIND: organic greens + organic cucumber + organic mint + apple + banana + pure coconut water (helps detoxify the body due to its beta-carotene)
GREEN MONSTER XAVIER: organic greens + pineapple + banana + organic ginger (encourages healing of the body and aids in digestion)
GREEN DREAM CASANOVA: organic greens + organic cilantro + pineapple + apple + banana + cinnamon (detoxifier of metals and other impurities)
GREEN LOVER LUNA : watermelon + organic greens + organic malunggay + banana + cinnamon (promotes healthy kidneys and immune system)
BITTER SWEET XAVIER : pineapple + apple + organic greens, organic bitter gourd + banana (antiseptic and antibacterial for the body)
GREEN SOUL BRITA: pure coconut water + papaya, organic greens + banana (loaded with digestive enzymes and anti-oxidants)

#MarchPhotoADay Challenge! Day 25: Breakfast

My colds just turned 8-day-old today. And it's not something to celebrate about. Typically, I just suffer from colds for 2-3 days and then move on to coughs and/or fever. When this occurs, I let things happen as I refuse to be dependent on prescribed drugs. Since earlier this week, I've been contradicting myself and started popping the green pills in hopes to prevent what's yet to come.

Yesterday, my grandmother bought guyabano (otherwise known as soursop) from a vendor outside our home. We shared this between the two of us and, in between mouthfuls, I promised to buy her more guyabano and, another common favorite, avocado. Before lunchtime, I went to the grocery to fulfill this promise. Upon my arrival, we both prepared the ripe fruits and I decided to have more guyabano and I'll have my share of avocado for breakfast. When I woke up this morning, I noticed there were guyabano leftovers in the fridge (proving we're the only herbivores in the household) so I decided to have both fruits for breakfast.

Day 25: Breakfast

I know, guyabano (possibly sub-acid) and avocado (starch) is an odd combination. But guyabano is an excellent source of Vitamin C, very fitting for my current need. I even had real calamansi juice (acid) to go with them. Did I just hear you gasp? I admit, this is a very bad example of food combining.

Have I told you how my stomach proved to be highly trained in surviving bad combination of food? It had a track record of no complaints for Indian mango-and-soda combo, spoiled menudo, among others. I'm grateful for this gift as it allows me to stuff myself anything all the time, but I must remember that it's not a good way of treating my body. Proper food combining paves the way for good digestion; the easy-to-digest (light, water-based food) had to wait for the hard-to-digest ones (heavy proteins) before making an exit in our system. The longer it stays in our stomach, the bigger the possibility of fermentation which sadly leads to high acidity.

Since the onset of this journey to wellness, I learned facts that debunked food-related guides that were passed on from generations to generations. For instance, my guyabano-and-avocado-loving grandmother coached me NEVER consume fruits in an empty stomach and it's best eaten as dessert. In reality, fruits are our best bet in breaking fasts and it should be eaten first, salad second, finally the main course. Fruits play a key role in absorption of nutrients and they are the easiest to digest and, naturally, should be eaten 45 minutes before any meal.

Sorry if this entry sounds too rigid and heavy. But it's something we really need to know so our bodies would feel better. On the lighter side, the #MarchPhotoADay challenge is still ongoing! Here's the mechanics:

[12 of] 27 Dresses

You've heard of my intent to perform supporting roles in at least 27 weddings here. This year, the parade of romantic rites began at my aunt's exchange of vows with a family friend. I remember how we used to sigh about our seemingly zero lovelives and, in one instance, how I assured her that Mr. Right will definitely come knocking to those who patiently wait. Fast forward that day, she began a deeper romantic journey with Tito Jojo and I, in turn, introduced the new man in my life to our big (paternal) family. A milestone indeed!

The inspiration behind my gown! Thanks Google images!

As soon as my mother saw this picture, she bombarded me with disapproving spiels, reminding me how my big arms are total eye sores and all that. She even added the other secondary sponsors will don cocktail dresses so why can't I do the same? I countered sponsors are supposed to be in long dresses. If they won't, it's up to them.

The creation of this gown subjected me into series of stressful moments that are still too fresh to recount. Maybe when I can finally look back and laugh away. Then, there's this last-minute realization that my silver clutch bag refuses to unzip and my mum is too occupied running the show to help me find a decent replacement from her own closet. Anyway, this is a festive event so enough blabbing and let's proceed to the photos!

My beautiful bouquet

Wheeeeere's Waldo? Right here beside me!

Waldo is no part of the entourage, but this bratinella prefers that his attire would complement my gown and he looks stunning when we waltz in together. After all, nobody walks in in casual polo during meet-the-big-family moments like this, right? We had our own little adventure shopping for this formal wear and I'm glad that he realized that he, too, can look stylish in such outfit.

This medium close-up shot was brought to you by the unofficial photographer

Here comes the cord sponsors!

By the time reception rolled around, my gown had started manifesting slight malfunction. It was like Suzi and Geno were fighting for their own airtime, wanting to be freed from their hiding place. But that would be too obscene. So when they asked for the single ladies to come in front for the traditional bouquet throw, I had a valid excuse to remain seated and fidget on my buttons. Phew!

I know I've blogged somewhere that I truly enjoy the competition for the bouquet throws and I can't comprehend why most Pinays prefer to play the killjoy role each time. Now I realize that it's a different story when you're finally dating someone and they expect you to be the next to dash to tie the knot. Harharhar! Chill out, people!

Look for me...if you can!

Going back to the gown, I believe the fit can still be improved. And that Hello Kitty bag is beyond inappropriate for the event. I'll just try to redeem myself next time. When they renew their vows, maybe?

Outfit of the Day:

Hello Kitty handbag

#MarchPhotoADay Challenge! Day 9: [Puta] Red

I've been worried sick what to blog about since the start of the month. I've got a tall pile of backlog to work on plus I haven't really thought of anything cool to write about aside from the [tooooooooot]. Wait, something's creeping up.

I heard about this camera phone photo challenge on Facebook 2 days ago and, as you can expect from a camwhore like myself, I'm so thrilled to start right away. I was momentarily hesitant to join; I'd like to begin on the first day of the month. But, hey, who says I can't start posting photos today? If you're interested, check out the mechanics below.

[Camera Phone] Photo A Day Challenge! Lifted from Fat Mum Slim

Today's assignment is so close to my heart. As you can tell in my prior entries, I am such a big fan of screaming reds. Red lipstick makes me want to go panic buying even if most people think it looks best in fair-skinned women yada yada. I think I look sexier in red, too. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

So...I brought out an old blouse with argyle design, my trusty puta red lipstick (thanks, Revlon!), my souvenir hat that I am yet to world premiere (thanks, Ina!) and my red pumps from Solemate (not seen in this photo). Enjoy!

Day # 9: RED
